The Swedish town of Östersund joined ICORN in August 2017, with the Östersund Municipal Department of Culture and Recreation managing the ICORN programme in the town.
Östersund is a part of Sápmi, the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sami people, the indigenous people living in the very north of Europe. Sápmi is an area that stretches over Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The Sami culture, with its own history and traditions, has had a great influence on the region of Östersund.
The town has hosted three writers, artists, and journalists in ICORN residence: Syrian journalist, writer, and poet Suzanne Ibrahim, Palestinian poet, photogrpaher, and activist Dareen Tatour, and Eritrean, writer, and translator Omer Abib.
