On 6 March, Ramy Essam will perform under the title ‘Songs of Liberation’ at SCENE3, Det Norske Teatret in Oslo. The concert will be preceded by a talk with the Kawaakibi Foundation, an organisation ‘focused on empowering communities in North Africa and the Middle East.
14 years after the Egyptian revolution in 2011, Ramy Essam continues to be a leading voice for social justice, human rights, and freedom of expression from exile. At SCENE3, Det Norske Teatret, Essam and his band Samuli Kivelä and Juha Saunala will perform ‘Songs of Liberation’ at a time when the fight for freedom globally is more important than ever.
Prior to the concert, Kawaakibi Foundation will hold ‘Talks of Liberation’, focused on free speech, power, and solidarity, featuring cartoonist and political commentator Khalid Albaih, writer and human rights activist Iyad el-Baghdadi, and Kristine Eikrem.

Khalid Albaih is an award-winning political cartoonist, artist, journalist, curator, and human rights activist from Sudan. His work has been published in international media outlets, including The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, and NRP.
Albaih was the ICORN resident in Copenhagen between 2017 and 2019. He now lives in Oslo. You can find out more about Khalid Albaih and his work here.
Ramy Essam is an award-winning Egyptian musician and human rights defender. He has performed around the world and has collaborated with artists such as PJ Harvey and Tom Morello.
As one of the leading figures during the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, Essam faced censorship and persecution after the protests were shut down. Between 2014 and 2016, Essam was in ICORN residence in Malmö, Sweden. He now lives in Finland.
