Stockholm County Joins ICORN
In October 2025, Stockholm County joined ICORN, becoming the 5th Swedish regional member of the network, alongside the counties of Jönköping, Västra Götaland, Skåne, and Norrbotten.
Upon joining the network, Stockholm County expressed its pride in becoming an ICORN member and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democracy. The county's membership in ICORN is both practical and symbolic. Through this commitment, Stockholm County stands in solidarity with writers, artists, and journalists who face threats, persecution, or censorship because of their work.
Stockholm County's commitment to free expression and democratic values extends beyond its ICORN membership and is reflected in its broader efforts to strengthen cultural participation, artistic freedom, and democratic engagement both within the county and beyond. Its emphasis on the role of libraries is particularly significant, given their importance as open and accessible democratic spaces where people can access knowledge, encounter diverse perspectives, and engage in dialogue.
By supporting diverse voices and fostering safe spaces for creative expression, Stockholm County contributes to an open, inclusive, and vibrant cultural landscape.
As part of its ICORN membership, Stockholm County provides support and guidance to municipalities within the county that are interested in becoming ICORN Cities of Refuge.
ICORN warmly welcomes Stockholm County to the network and looks forward to working together to protect and promote the right to create, write, and speak freely.
