Julia Olivera is formally trained in Business Administration, but has written, designed and created cultural projects ever since she was a child. She is also a keen photographer and an active human rights defender through EDEFENDERH (Espacio de Defensores de Derechos Humanos) – a HRD platform which originated in Honduras after the coup in 2009. Olivera is a founding member of the National Association of Women Writers in Honduras (ANDEH) and the National Union of Writers in Honduras. She is also an active member of Greenpeace.

Olivera is an ex-member of the 'Casa Tomada' poetry group, which existed in Honduras from 1993 to 1998. She was a poet in residence in Mexico through a scholarship provided by Iberoamerican Artists in 2011, working with installation and performance, and has held exhibitions in various Central American countries, Argentina and Mexico – most notably the 'Palacio de Correos' in Guatemala, 'Santa Tecla' in El Salvador, the Palace of Bellas Artes of Mexico, the 'Centro Nacional de las Artes (CNA)' in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the 'Museo del Mural Diego Rivera'.

In 2000, she organised the '1st Avenue in Hurricane Comayagüela Art', a big event in the centre of Comayagüela, honouring the victims of Hurricane Mitch. She is published by Editorial Pez Dulce in Honduras, and in various national and international anthologies, digital magazines and newspapers.

Julia Olivera has written the biographies of three Honduran candidates for the contest '1000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize, 2005 / Mil mujeres de paz, premio Nobel de la Paz 2005'.

She arrived in Sweden in 2014 and was the ICORN resident in Jönköping between 2014 and 2016.
