Khaled Harara is a renowned Palestinian hip-hop artist. Harara was born in Yemen, but later lived in Gaza. His lyrics offer a humanitarian and social perspective on the political situation in Palestine, criticising the lack of freedom of expression and the suffering under Hamas rule.
In Gaza, Harara was the first artist to organise hip-hop workshops for young people, focusing on lyric writing and alternative forms of self-expression. These workshops were eventually banned, along with his hip-hop group Palestinian Unit and the artist organisation he was affiliated with.
Due to his outspoken artistic work and his participation as a soldier in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) before Hamas took control of Gaza, Harara has been labeled an 'enemy of the state'. He has been imprisoned multiple times, and several of his friends have been killed or injured in clashes with Hamas forces.
Fearing continued persecution, Harara remained Denmark after participating in the Rapolitics festival.
Between 2013 and 2015, Harara was the ICORN resident in Gothenburg. He continues his work from Sweden.
